The annual Founders Day Service will be held Sunday, April 30, 4 pm, at the Jenny Lind Chapel in Andover. The speaker is Jason Mahn, who is the Associate Professor of Religion at Augustana College, Chair, Religion & Director, Pre-Seminary Program. His focus will be on the Reformation. After completing his Ph.D at Emory University, Jason taught full time at Duke University for three years before coming to Augustana, where he teaches courses in theology and contemporary religious belief. His current research project – the problem and promise of “becoming a Christian in Christendom,” puts Lutheran critics of cultured Christianity, together with critics from the radical Reformation, to consider what faithful Christian discipleship looks like in today’s “secular” world. The project also entails shadowing several intentional Christian communities and other “radical” forms of discipleship.
Pastor Dan Witkowski from First Lutheran Church in Moline will lead the service. Music will be provided by Pastor Cliff Schmidt, soloist, and Deanna Swanson, organist, both from Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover. Following the service, light refreshments will be provided by Swedona Lutheran Church. The service commemorates the founding of Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover, the Augustana Synod and Augustana College & Theological Seminary. The Jenny Lind Chapel is a ministry of the Northern Illinois Synod.
