The annual Founders Day Service will be held at the Jenny Lind Chapel at 4 pm on Sunday, April 29. The speaker will be Pastor Richard Priggie, Augustana College Chaplain. This service celebrates the 158th anniversary of both the Augustana Lutheran Church in America and Augustana College and Theological Seminary and the 168th anniversary of the Augustana Lutheran congregation in Andover. Deanna Swanson from Augustana Lutheran Church in Andover will be the organist, and light refreshments will be served following the service by members of First Lutheran Church in Moline.
The Chapel, constructed in the early 1850’s, is named for the celebrated Swedish singer, Jenny Lind, who gave a generous donation to Pastor Lars Paul Esbjörn, leader of the Swedish immigrants to Illinois. It became the mother church for hundreds of other churches of the Augustana Lutheran Church in America. The lower level houses a museum highlighting the Swedish immigration and ancestry of the Augustana Synod. The Chapel, which is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm April through October, is a ministry of the Northern Illinois Synod. The web site is jennylindchapel.org.
