Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the ELCA Guidebook?

It’s a mobile app commissioned by the churchwide office and available for synodical use. It replaced much of the paper resources at the 2013 and 2016 Churchwide Assemblies and is an information source for assembly participants. This is the first year the Northern Illinois Synod has used the Guidebook app for its annual assembly.

2. What is in our Synod Assembly Guidebook?

The Synod Assembly Guidebook will give you all of the assembly resources you need on site or to follow along from home. It includes our agenda, Bulletin of Reports, maps, updates, photos, social media, and more. During assembly, there will be updates that include announcements and items that come from the floor of the assembly.

3. What are the minimum requirements for using the ELCA Guidebook?

Guidebook guides are available on any smartphone, tablet, or computer that can connect to the internet. Guidebook offers a native app for iOS, Android, Amazon, and Blackberry 10+ devices. For all other web-enabled devices, such as Windows phones/tablets, visit  guidebook.com/guide/89118.

Here’s a full list of Guidebook compatible devices:

  • iOS: Guidebook is supported on all web-enabled Apple products running iOS version 8 and up.
  • Android: Guidebook is supported on all web-enabled Android products running Android version 4 and up. (For users running Android versions between 2.3 and 4, you may still access an old version of the Guidebook app. However, this old version lacks many of the new features and is no longer maintained. For this reason, we recommend using the Guidebook Web version of the app or upgrading your operating system to Android 4+).
  • Amazon: Guidebook is supported on all web-enabled Amazon products except for the 1st Generation Kindle Fire.
  • Blackberry: Guidebook is supported on all web-enabled Blackberry products running Blackberry 10 and up.
  • Web-Enabled Devices: All web-enabled devices (including Windows Phones/Tablets) may access our mobile web version of Guidebook at guidebook.com/guide/89118. Because Guidebook Web is not a native solution, several features are absent from the web version. Note: We recommend using Google Chrome when interacting with Guidebook Web -- Internet Explorer may experience some minor behavioral issues.

4. How do I access/install the Guidebook?

Use any of the ways below to access the Guidebook:

  • Use any web browser to go to guidebook.com/app/ELCAEvents/guide/nis2017assembly. From that page, you can text yourself a link to the app, or if you scroll further down the page, there are direct links to the iOS app, the Android app, and the web platform.
  • iOS: For Apple devices go to the Apple App Store and search for “ELCA Organizations and Events”. After installing that app, download the 2017 NIS Assembly guide.
  • Android: For Android devices, go to the Google Play Store and search for "ELCA Organizations and Events." After installing that app, download the 2017 NIS Assembly guide.
  • Web: Our guide is also available through any web browser, just go to this web address: guidebook.com/guide/89118.

5. How will I know I have the latest version of a document being considered by the Assembly?

New documents will be uploaded with the version noted.

6. How will the Guidebook app content be updated?

When changes to the ELCA Guidebook are published, it can take up to 10 minutes for the new content to appear on your device. To be sure your Guidebook is up to date, tap the menu icon in the upper corner of your screen and tap the refresh icon that looks like arrows forming a circle.

7. Will a device be provided to me at the assembly?

No. You are responsible for either printing your own documents in advance or having a device for use at the assembly.

8. Will there be charging stations in Centennial Hall?

No. You are responsible for making sure your device’s battery is charged in between sessions or that you have brought a battery booster for your device.
