500 Years of Singing: Exploring the Lutheran and Reformed Choral Traditions – Zebulon Highben

Martin Luther and his colleagues famously created the German chorales and established a prominent place for vernacular hymns in their worship orders of 1523 and 1526. But Luther also loved choral singing, and a robust repertoire of choral music developed contemporaneously with the chorales. The Reformed tradition is known for its treasury of metrical psalmody, which also gave rise to a rich legacy of choral works. But what exactly are these choral traditions? What are their musical, textual, and liturgical parameters? How did they influence each other? Using repertoire from the new Augsburg Chorale Book and its sister volumes, this session will answer these questions and highlight the various streams of Lutheran and Reformed choral music, from the sixteenth century to the present day.

Priceless Treasures: Hymns and Songs in Parish Life – Wayne Wold

In addition to presenting ideas about using hymns creatively in worship, Wold will discuss other areas of parish life—rehearsals, meetings, education, fellowship and outreach events, publications and public relations, and more—where hymns and hymn-singing can be enriching and meaningful tools for spiritual formation, community-building, and memory-making.

Treasures from the File Cabinet – Highben & Wold

Our choral libraries are full of great choral works that have often been forgotten at the “back of the file drawer”. In this workshop, Wold and Highben will re-introduce some of the classic Augsburg anthems from yesteryear and discuss creative ways to incorporate them into worship and keep them fresh for a new generation of singers and congregations.

Hymn Festival: Seasons of the Son

A program of readings, prayers, hymns and songs from many times and places that explore and celebrate the richness of the Church Year. A part of Augsburg Fortress Summer Music Clinic, free and open to the public.
