Please keep the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) in your prayers as it installs the Rev. Sani Ibrahim Azar as the ELCJHL’s fourth bishop. The Rev. Munib Younan concludes his 20-year service as bishop and becomes bishop emeritus. ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton is in the Holy Land leading an ELCA delegation attending the installation. ‘Joy to the world’ – a look back at Christmas with ELCA missionaries
“There’s no place like home for the holidays,” claims the popular Christmas song. For many ELCA missionaries, however, celebrating Christmas away from home is an opportunity to bear witness to the blessings of the global Lutheran church. As they share Christmas worship, meals and other traditions in a rich diversity of cultures, many missionaries discover a new understanding of the church holiday – and their faith – along the way. In this Living Lutheran article, six missionaries share what they have observed from their unique contexts.
Have a missionary visit your congregation this summer
Is your congregation interested in having an ELCA missionary visit to preach and present about the global church? Every summer, a portion of our missionaries come back to the U.S. for a few weeks to share the story of their ministry with supportive members and congregations around the country. Hosting a missionary is a great way for your congregation to deepen its engagement and support Global Church Sponsorship. For more information about this opportunity, email email@example.com. Host congregations contribute to the cost of travel, lodging and meals associated with missionary visits.
2018-19 YAGM applications – one month left to apply!
The ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program invites young adults ages 21-29 into a year of service, faith formation and relationship building in 11 country programs around the world. Young adults serve in the spirit of accompaniment, walking alongside global companions in a manner that practices mutuality, interdependence and solidarity. As they offer themselves in service, young adults are shaped by the witness of our global neighbors. Check out ELCA.org/yagm for more information and apply now! Applications are due Feb. 15 for service beginning August 2018.
Profiles of a YAGM group
One of the core components of the YAGM program is community building. Volunteers are encouraged to reflect together on their experiences, share stories about their joys and struggles, worship and pray together, and support and learn from one another. YAGM Southern Africa volunteer Samantha DiBiaso shares her insights on how volunteers come to know, support and encourage each other during this life-changing year of service together abroad.
