Together with presiding bishops of the ELCA and The Episcopal Church, we PRAY, FAST and ACT in support of comprehensive polices that support people struggling with housing insecurity and homelessness.
“O God, you are the tree of life, offering shelter to all the world. Graft us into yourself and nurture our growth, that we may bear your truth and love to those in need, through Jesus Christ, Our Savior and Lord. Amen.” (Evangelical Lutheran Worship, page 39)
We fast on this day in solidarity with people who must choose between paying their utility and housing bills and buying food for their family. Consider a fast that unplugs from electricity, or turns off energy for heating or cooling, as a way to be mindful of the struggle some face to access or pay for these natural resources.
Lutherans, in our social teachings, affirm that housing is a basic human right. As Lutherans and Episcopalians together, let us lift our voices and ask our members of Congress to protect funding that addresses housing affordability and homelessness. (Learn more about this issue here.)
