Augustana College invites you to attend all or any sessions with Stanley Hauerwas when he visits Augustana on Thursday, September 17. His sessions are part of the Fall-Term Symposium Day, on which classes are cancelled and all students are encouraged (and often required) to attend sessions of their choosing.

There are three opportunities for you to meet and hear from Stanley Hauerwas:

The State of College and Christianity: A Conversation with “America’s Best Theologian”

Stanley Hauerwas, the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law at Duke University, was named “America’s Best Theologian” by Time Magazine in 2001. In this interview with Jason Mahn (Associate Professor of Religion), Dr. Hauerwas will field questions about Christianity in the contemporary world, the state of church-related colleges, what faith has to do with learning, the changing demographics of American religion, and much more. He may even tell a story or two about his years teaching at Augustana College in the the late 1960s!

1:45 – 2:45 pm

The Forum, 2nd Floor, Old Main

Continued Conversation with Dr. Stanley Hauerwas

Students, faculty, and staff at Augustana as well as guests of the College are invited to some continued conversation with Dr. Hauerwas. Want to know what it was like when Hauerwas taught here forty-some years ago? Ask him.  Want to talk about his and your reaction to Augustana’s 5 Faith Commitments? Ask him. Have a burning theological or ethical question? Ask him (but be ready to be asked some questions back!). Want to hear a few more stories in that delightful Texan accent? Sit back and listen.

2:45 – 3:45 pm

The Forum, 2nd Floor, Old Main

Reception for Dr. Hauerwas, with refreshments

Invited clergy and interested others from the Quad Cities community will have a chance to meet and talk with Dr. Hauerwas at an informal reception.  Because we want to be sure to have ample food and drink available, please let us know by return e-mail if you do plan to attend this 2:45 p.m. reception.

Because the campus will be crowded that day, it would be best for you to park in the lot adjacent to Centennial Hall.  The Gerber Center, where the 11:15 a.m. session will be held, is on the back of the Tredway Library.  Those who need handicapped accessibility may be dropped off at the front door of the Gerber Center on 9 1/2 Avenue, Rock Island.

Any questions?  Please contact Pastor Richard W. Priggie, Chaplain, Augustana College at richardpriggie@augustana.edu or 309-794-7478.
