#CycleToSynod 2019

“I am a part of Cycle to Synod because ELCA Word Hunger ministries is important to me.  I believe we can work toward ending world hunger.  And this is an exciting way to get my whole family involved in raising awareness and funds for ELCA World Hunger.”  — Pastor Jamie Gallagher of First Lutheran Church, Monmouth on why he is a part of Cycle to Synod.

Read on to learn more about this amazing event happening in our Synod leading up to our Synod Assembly.

Join the 2nd annual Cycle to Synod this June 11 through June 13.  The Northern Illinois Synod World Hunger sub-committee and the Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries co-sponsor this exciting bike ride to raise awareness and funds for the ELCA World Hunger ministry.

Cycle to Synod will provide cyclists a wonderful ride through the rolling hills of western Illinois.  Our launch is June 11 at 10 AM from St. Matthew’s in Princeton, IL and continue to the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, and finishing at Zion Lutheran Church in Kewanee, IL.  Day 2 has riders leaving Kewanee and pedaling to Cambridge Lutheran Church, Cambridge, and onward to First Lutheran Church, Geneseo.  Day 3 will feature a ride from Geneseo to Andover to see the historic Jenny Lind Chapel.  The ride will finish at First Lutheran Church in Rock Island.  During the opening plenary session of Synod Assembly, cyclists will walk their bikes into Centennial Hall to be recognized for their accomplishment.

At our overnight stops at Zion, Kewanee and First, Geneseo, Cycle to Synod will provide a conversational Bible study promoting the work of ELCA World Hunger ministries.  These congregations will provide a dinner in which the Bible study will occur.  Our lunch sponsors, First Lutheran Church, Prophetstown and Augustana Lutheran Church, Andover, will also receive promotional materials for ELCA World Hunger.  If you join us at any of our planned congregations stops, you may receive these same materials to bring back to your congregations to help promote ELCA World Hunger ministries in your own community.

How can you support Cycle to Synod?  Included with this article are three flyers you may replicate and distribute through your congregation. The first flyer invites each congregation to recruit at least 10 financial sponsors willing to write a check of at least $25 to Northern Illinois Synod, with “Cycle to Synod” written in the memo line.  Any financial gift is appreciated.  All checks with “Cycle to Synod” on the memo line are dedicated to ELCA World Hunger. You can also donate online at nisynod.org/cycletosynod.

The first flyer also invites each congregation to recruit at least 10 prayer sponsors, individuals who are willing to write prayer cards or notes of encouragement to send ahead for the cyclists who will pedal 30 to 50 miles of road biking on each of the three days.  These prayers sponsorships may be mailed to Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries by June 1: Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries, C/O Amy Hoening, 200 North First Street, Rockford, IL 61101.

A second flyer promotes year-round ideas for ways to support Cycle to Synod, including ideas such as “schedule a congregation visit from a member of the Northern Illinois Synod World Hunger sub-committee to lead further conversation about ELCA World Hunger” and “Sign up to ride with Cycle to Synod.”

How do I sign up for Cycle to Synod?  The third flyer includes information about registration, which can be done online at nisynod.org (type Cycle to Synod into the search bar) or by calling Amy Hoening of the Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries at 815-962-4279.

Cycle to Synod is a three-day event of riding 30-50 miles each day over rolling hills.  This may sound like it can only be handled by top-notch cyclists.  But alas, that is a myth.  Even the casual rider can join Cycle to Synod.  You can ride for an hour, you can ride for half a day, you can join us for one full day.  There are so many ways to be included.  When you register, you are able to share how much time you can devote to riding your bicycle with Cycle to Synod.

Cycle to Synod also needs support vehicle drivers.  A support vehicle driver provides escort at the front or back of our line of cyclists.  A support vehicle may be used to transport cyclists in case of inclement weather.  A support vehicle driver will also have essentials like snacks, coolers of bottled water, first aid kits, and additional bike repair needs.  You can register to be a support vehicle driver by calling Amy Hoening of the Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries at 815-962-4279.   You may have a minivan, a pick-up truck, a small sedan, it doesn’t matter.  Any vehicle will provide the needed help.

Are you excited for Cycle to Synod?  Are you excited to raise awareness and funds for ELCA World Hunger ministries?  This is your chance to help get your congregation excited to support.  Cycle to Synod has a Facebook event page titled “Cycle to Synod”.  Click the “Like” button and follow the action as we prepare for our ride and share pictures and stories from the ride.  Maybe you will even see your own picture riding a bicycle or driving a support vehicle!  Sign up today and be a part of a truly fantastic ministry.
