Northern Illinois Synod ELCA Women, (NISWO) will be be providing a way to connect with others, throughout the NISynod, through its first shared Virtual Thankoffering, on the Sunday January 24 2021, at 2:00 P.M.
We will be able to share/connect, through Zoom, with others that may have moved away to other parts of the country. Maybe we have not been able to see each other even from our own churches, for awhile. Some of us thought that this next step is what we need to combat the isolation that occurs, due to Covid 19, after not have the chance to meet for Triennial or Convention last year.
Let’s get together to share with others, what Women have been doing for a very long time, a tradition of Thankoffering, that dates back to the very early 1800s, when women formed “mite” or “cent” societies to raise money. This money was used to support the social activism present in their time. Now it is used to support Bible studies, advocate for child labor, literacy, and prison reform, to help fight racism, human trafficking, and support foreign missions, to name a few.
You do not need to be a member of an existing group to be able to worship with us or feel pressured to give towards Churchwide WELCA, through Thankoffering. We will be providing an opportunity, a means to do so, if you wish.
Here is how it will work: We will be able to use the Zoom Account from Resurrection Lutheran’s, Channahon, IL., in the East Conference. Their account can accommodate a larger audience and provide us with a greater experience, for a longer time.
NISWO board, and others that will have individual speaking parts. These will be assigned ahead. President Connie Seavy will open the program, followed by the short video presentation of “What Inspired You”. The video is a collection of interviews by our Synod Women Pastors, that was made in commemoration of the 50th year ordination of Women.
You will be able to follow along with your own copy of the Thankoffering, in downloadable form (see link at the bottom of this page).
Discipleship Chairperson, Debra Quinn, will give the Sermon, based on Matthew 5:1-12. Deb will tell us what inspired her to travel to Tanzania and organize a continued shared connection with Women there.
Sharing of the Peace will be a time to fellowship with one another.
And finally Stewardship chairman, Ann Terry, will help anyone who would like to make an offering, traditionally to Churchwide WELCA on-line, at welca.org/give.
If this all sounds complicated, we can select partners with others that can help us.
We now have another way to stay together, beyond the newsletter and phone calls. Meeting personally this way should be exciting! Please mark you calendars and help get the word out!!
The Northern Illinois Synod WELCA wishes you the most happy New Year!!!
Know that you and your families are being held in prayer by us all!!
NISWO Social Justice Chairperson
East Conference Rep.
This year’s Thankoffering is in memory of Ann Kurtz 1/19/1937 -10/29/2020. I am indebted to her for keeping WELCA alive for me, during her many active years!
