Through the generosity of members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Northern Illinois Synod secured $12,500 in grants to assist congregations during the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the spring, the Northern Illinois Synod received $5,000 to share with congregations seeking to enter or improve technological capabilities. Many of our congregations began recording or streaming live worship services to stay connected with their members. Grants helped eight congregations purchase equipment, update web sites, buy licenses for sharing music and hymns, get internet capability, and improve wireless internet access.
During the autumn, the Northern Illinois Synod received a second grant of $7,500. The second round of grants were dedicated to supporting nutritional ministries across the synod. Congregations purchased food, prepared meals, stocked mini-pantries, and hosted both large- and small-scale food distributions. Seventeen congregations increased their capacity to make a difference in their communities through these grants.
