Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry, IL is seeking a Director of Finance & Building Operations.  The position is part time 26 - 30 hours per week.  

The Finance Director reports to the Council Treasurer and manages the day to day business & administrative requests of the church as needed.  This position is considered part of the support staff of the church and will need to collaborate with the Pastor, Congregation, Church Support Staff, Endowment Committee, & the Church Council.  

Job responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • General Finances - Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, manage all business transactions, including maintaining and reconciling general ledger transactions and transfers in specialized church software.  Assist the Church Council Treasurer in preparing the annual budget and completing the annual audit, manage all financial reports, & manage and reconcile all bank activity.
  • Payroll - Review timesheets, year end reports, write paychecks, prepare and record tax forms, etc. Create, maintain, and administer all employee records, documents, and benefit information as needed.
  • Manage contributions - Supervise and count offerings, record contributions, process monthly ACH, Provide quarterly donor statements, and maintain online giving platforms in a timely and confidential manner.
  • Building management - work with the Church Council Building Committee & Council Treasurer to manage service contracts, supervise maintenance personnel, schedule cleaning services, process insurance claims, review & resolve alarm issues, etc.

Other duties:

  • Coordinate special services - (Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, holiday decorating)
  • Support various church committees as needed.
  • Review and provide benevolence requests and maintain records.
  • Review scholarship applications and maintain approved scholarship payments.
  • Maintain project summary reports, document, and maintain Church procedure records. 
  • Assist with answering phones & other light office duties.


The ideal candidate will have accounting degree & experience, attention to detail, positive outlook, self-starter, excellent follow through, and work well with others. Experience with MS office required.  Experience in Power Church preferred.
