Whereas, Genesis states that all creation is “good;” and,
Whereas, as Christians we begin our confession with praise for God as the creator of all things; and,
Whereas, Luther teaches us in the explanation to the first article of the creed that we ought to thank and praise, serve and obey this creator God; and,
Whereas, worship is our primary forum for giving thanks and praise to God; and,
Whereas, confession and repentance regarding our transgressions against Creation are becoming more critical on a daily basis; and,
Whereas, prominent Lutheran theologians have provided a liturgical and homiletical framework to offer thanks and praise to God for the goodness of creation (Habel, Rhoads and Santmire, eds. The Season of Creation: A Preaching Commentary. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2011.); and,
Whereas, the NIS Creation Care Subcommittee has already provided practical and useful resources building on the work of these theologians,
Therefore be it resolved that the Northern Illinois Synod recommit to its resolution (Resolution R1 - 2018) to encourage congregations to choose “Season of Creation” as part of its regular liturgical practice.
Be it further resolved that each conference of the Northern Illinois Synod be encouraged to host an annual Creation focused worship.
Be it further resolved that the committees which organize the Congregational Resourcing Event (CRE), Synod Assembly, and the Professional Leaders Conference (PLC) incorporate Creation-focused worship or devotions at these events.
Be it further resolved that the Northern Illinois Synod encourage each congregation to undertake at least one Creation care focused project or program annually.
Be it further resolved that the Northern Illinois Synod request the NIS Creation Care Subcommittee develop resources for the congregations and members of the synod to advocate for practices and policies that repair and sustain the ailing Creation.
Be it further resolved that the Northern Illinois Synod Creation Care Subcommittee be encouraged and supported in its work to provide resources and direction in the above activities.
